Hi there! Welcome to Ken's Study Journey! Today, I am going to introduce and demonstrate my 8 useful non-electronic things that can let me study effectively.

Many schools ban electronic devices to ensure student's safety. However, we still can use some non-electronic things to let me study effectively.

I have been inventing some new ways and things to study better and effectively since 2019, so my scores were better and better. Also, I have been featured by my extra classes and schools as an excellent student and entered the top 10 in my whole grade for the scores.

In addition, there were many schoolmates who asked me about my useful study things and tips last week such as my daily goals (and its checklist) and vocabulary cards. This is because there are many schoolmates recognized that I have many great study tips, things, and habits.

Do you know what things I am using to let me study effectively and finish my study tasks more quickly. Follow me!

Note: Some resources and/or their templates are available for downloading on my website. You can click on the buttons to go to the download page (on computers only).

Vocabulary Cards

Since 2020, I have invented my vocabulary cards to remember new English words in my school in my free time, especially when waiting to pick up food in the school mess.

There are 2 parts in the card. The English words are situated in the left hand side, while another side shows the corresponding meanings and their parts of speech. I usually cover one side to test myself to recall the items I have just remembered.

One piece of card can display only a few words. This is because the size of the card is very small, which is similar to a card, so it is easy to put into the pocket and I can carry it and remember words anywhere.

Also, I can remember just a number words repeatedly, so I can remember the words much faster. Then, I can change to the next card only if I have remembered all words on the card successfully.

Comparing with different versions

Recently, I have upgrade my vocabulary cards to the third generation (v3), which adds the phonetic symbols and removes the paper clip that corrodes the words on the card. Also, I just need to flip the cards to turn to the next page.

I usually prepare for the cards for next week at weekends because I live in the school dormitory on weekdays. In addition, I use Quizlet, an English words memorizing app, at weekends.

Daily Goals Checklist

Excellent students always have their own daily goals made by themselves. This is because they want to study more every single day.

Not only do I made my daily goals, but also I made my checklist to make sure that I have achieved my goals.

I always mark a tick or cross on the checklist every evening before the sleeping time to check whether I have achieved my goals today.

Also, I make conclusions about the situations of my goals every weekend based on the marks written on the checklist. Then, I will make better plans for the next week to achieve more goals.

In addition, my goals can be upgraded and/or downgraded at any time based on my real situations. This is because I could not study better if my goals were very high or low.

My Daily Goals

Last Updated: Oct. 3, 2020 7:15 AM

Goals 1-3. Pause during the exam day(s).

  1. Remember at least 40 English words.
  2. Read books for at least 1 hour (60 minutes).
  3. Read books for at least 1 chapter.
  1. Speak at least 100 English sentences. (including dubbing app and morning reading)
  2. Write at least 150 English sentences.
  3. Walk for at least 10,000 steps.
  4. Chat with at least 4 friends.

Goals 8-9. Pause where there is no lesson.

  1. Answer at least 1 question during the lesson.
  2. Take notes for at least 4 pages.
  1. Discover or ask at least 1 academic problem/question.
  2. Take exercise(s) for at least 30 minutes.

Goal 12. For weekends and holidays only.

  1. Listen to English audio for at least 30 minutes. (especially TED talks)

Note: There is no penalty for the failure to achieve goals and there is no need to achieve all goals. My aim is to study better and get better results by studying hard. I just need to try to achieve them as possible.

Sticky Note Reminders

Sometimes, I forgot to do some essential things because I am busy with my study tasks. Therefore, my pressure usually rises during school days.

In order to address this issue, I recently bought some sticky notes. I can remind me by writing some reminders and sticking them onto my desk and/or locker in the classroom.

At weekend, I usually use Microsoft To Do app on my phone, laptop and home PC, which can automatically remind me and organize my work across my devices using a Microsoft account.

My Personal Bookmark

I have also made my personal bookmark to read books effectively, which shows the reading reminder, reading time, reading tips, etc.

There is also my personal logo on each side because the bookmark has been designed by myself. I want to keep my branding on it.

I didn't have bookmarks before, but I thought that it is better to make my own one rather than buying. This is because not only can I make reminders on my bookmarks, but also I can practice my DIY skills.

You just need to print it to an A4 paper, cut it and stick together. Each of them has 2 bookmarks.

In order to arrange and use the precious time properly and do my tasks effectively, I made my own schedule with detailed time and things to do.

When I am in my school, I follow my school's schedule. However, I need to follow my own schedule at weekends or holidays because the time needs to be allocated by students themselves.

According to my 'Study First' principle, I usually do my schoolwork before doing other tasks during the self-study time.

In addition, I have my ultimate sleeping time and getting-up time at home, which are 11:30 PM and 6:00 AM respectively (except for catching the airplane). I must sleep after 11:30 PM whether I have finished all my works and unfinished works should be done tomorrow.

Study Plan

Not only did I make my schedule, but also I have my study plans to let me do study things in different circumstances.

  • Remember English words when waiting in a queue, taking a walk, or on some transportation vehicles (underground, train, plane).
  • Watch an English movie every Friday evening from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM (or the day going back home from school).
  • Read books during self-study time on my schedule after finishing all schoolwork or on some transportation vehicles (train, plane).
  • Listen to English audios on transportation vehicles (e. g. car, bus, train, plane; TED talks and podcasts).

Note: I need to select the best one of the plans when in transportation vehicles (e. g. car, bus. underground, train, plane).

I am going to tell a relevant economics knowledge: Opportunity Cost

I need to make the best choice when there are many things I want and I cannot obtain all of them. Different things have different benefits.

Opportunity cost means the best alternative forgone in economics. If I give a choice, I need to abandon all other things so I will lose the benefits of other things.

For example, listening to English audios can practice my English listening skills, but remembering English words can gain my vocabulary. I need to choose one of them on a 15-minute journey bus. If I choose to listen to audios instead of remembering words, I will lose some vocabulary, so the vocabulary I will not remember is the opportunity cost.

Therefore, I need to make considerations according to the circumstances, such as my spirit, the temperature, the light, the size of the space, and the volume of other sounds.

Note: Some of the things included in this plan may require electronic devices, which will only be used at weekends and/or holidays.

As we know, folders can organize the papers handed out by the teachers. Different folders have different subjects or categories.

I prepared some folders with labels for the subjects, such as math, English, physics.

I recommend that we use folders with zippers rather than buttons. This is because folders with buttons are easier to be opened than zippers so the documents may drop out automatically. I will tell you further about this in a future article.

Signs in my Bedroom

I also have made some signs in my bedroom to improve my self-management skills. This is because I have a good self-management skill but sometimes I am mismanaged.

The cards can let me manage myself better by showing the reminders and warnings in case I forgot. I usually see the cards so I can remember them, then I can stop my bad habits. I am very like English, and the cards are bilingual between English and Chinese.
