Recently, there is a pandemic around the cities of my school and my home, so we need to attend online classes instead of offline lessons on the campus.

I wrote an article about my daily life and routine inside the GCGS campus, you can compare with it to find the differences.

We have finished the IGCSE exam, and we should study A Level on September, but we need to study it in advance to offset the delayed bicycle riding activity later on.

In my school, the online lessons may be the strictest one so far. I already attended online lessons and I had this experience to study well in my junior high school, PCIS.

This article is going to explain how I study and allocate my time, and the differences between it and the online lessons last year. Let's go!

Note: This article may contain the school information. If you are a staff or an editor and you do not want them to be displayed on my website, please contact me to delete them.

Why we Attend A Level Online Lessons?

In fact, my school organises the bicycle riding activity every single year around the Silk Road to strengthen our courage for Grade 10 students who finished the IGCSE exam. However, during the pandemic, this activity is delayed at the end of September 2021.

So, what do we do during this period if we do not go for this activity? We went back home immediately after the exam, so it is a hazard to go back to school or anywhere else again. Online lessons are the best choice for this special case.

Since September 2021, the original plan is to study A Level. However, the school swapped its plan so A Level courses are moved backwards until now.

Also, there was a lockdown in Guangzhou, the city where I live, but technology advance brings us convenience for contacting and have meeting or lessons with others. Online lessons are the only choice for studying A Level in advance.

Related Knowledge

Now, I am going to talk about IGCSE physics (0625) and computer science (0478) knowledge: Internet technology and optical fibre.

The speed of light in vacuum and air are both 3 x 108 km/s which is pretty fast. Optical fibre uses total internal reflection of light so that we can search things on the Internet, chat with friends and attend online lessons in just a second.

There are 2 ways for data transmission, serial and parallel. The parallel transmission uses several wires (usually 8 wires, 1 byte) with several bits at a time which is only used in internal data transfer within a computer.

However, we usually use serial transmission on the Internet and USB (Universal Serial Bus) because the data cannot be 'skewed' over a long distance. The serial transmission only uses 1 wire with 1 bit at a time. Because the light is very fast, the transmission speed can still be up to 128 MB/s (1,000 Mbps bandwidth).

My Preparations and Materials for the Lessons

I have made some preparations before to ensure that I can study effectively throughout my online lessons study journey.

Grid Notebook

Since I study AS and A Level, I changed my notebooks with grids on every page.

In the grid, I can determine the font size and write tidily according to the situations. The vertical lines are helpful to align the text to the left.

I also can draw some images, such as some axis in Mathematics (9709, 9231) and apparatus in Chemistry (9701), accurately in a short time with the help of the lines in the grid.

I also design some knowledgeable covers for each notebook with relevant IGCSE knowledge.

The following image shows the front cover of my AS and A Level Computer Science notebook.

A Level Notebook Computer Science 9618

It involves some images, such as an XOR logic gate and its truth table and some codes in programming languages and flowchart, used to show that I am interested in this subject and I am creative.

Meanwhile, my name is inside the image (e.g. XOR gate in Computer Science and conical flask in Chemistry).

This helps me focus more on studying and making research.

Related Knowledge

Now, I am going to talk about IGCSE Computer Science (0478) knowledge: logic gates.

Computers have thousands of logic gates, such as AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR and XNOR. They perform logic actions for binary numbers (0 and 1) and their results can be represented using truth table.

Oxford and Cambridge cannot be both applied, so there is an XOR gate if we need to apply for Oxbridge, like the image above. If we also want to apply other schools, it should be an NAND gate.

My Notebooks in Other Subjects

Getting Ready for Class

I always murmur to myself before each lesson to make preparations before lessons much better using the following sentence, like Cambridge International Exams.

"Please check the label and front cover of the notebook to make sure you have the correct notebook. You should have a notebook on your desk. As well as your notebook, you should also have pens and a computer and/or a calculator."

I usually enter the virtual classroom meeting 5 minutes before the class to adjust my mood in advance so that I can concentrate on studying more easily.

Hanging Signs on the Door Handlebar

I also usually hang a sign onto the door handlebar of my bedroom. It indicates that the lesson is in progress. I made them last year when I attended online lessons last year.

These signs can prevent others in my family from disturbing me from studying normally.

Did you know?

Apple iOS/iPadOS 15, watchOS 8 and macOS Monterey will be released in the autumn in 2021.

They will bring a stack of new useful features, such as Focus (a new form of Do Not Disturb mode) and iCloud+. Focus feature can temporarily remove some distracting apps, website and their notifications. Other people in the iMessage will know if you enabled Focus mode when they send messages.

How Strict it is

In order to ensure the teaching effects for students, my school also uses a set of rules to regulate the behaviour of students like inside the campus.

This is similar to 'Full School Supervision' from Monday to Friday (until 2:30 PM) and 'Full Centre Supervision' on Cambridge exams.

Using Webcam during the Lessons

We are required to turn on the webcam and aim at the face throughout the lesson, including self-study lessons and evening lessons.

Why is this? With the webcams, teachers and staff in the school can ensure all students are present and listening to the class carefully. However, some top students in my class, including me, feel that it is very annoying.

If you feel that the webcam is very annoying, especially top students who have study awareness, you can simply turn off the computer screen or minimise the meeting window.

If we do not turn on the webcam, some students who lack awareness of studying may do other things, sleep in the classroom, or even go to other places while they entered the virtual classroom on their computers.

Teachers have no control on the usage of computers. Computers are required to attend online lessons but they can be used to have activities other than studying. Unlike on the campus, teachers can restrict our usage of phones, iPads and laptops.

Handing in Phones and Computers to Parents

The second point is that we also need to hand in our phones, iPads and computers to parents according to the school rules.

We usually go back to school on Sunday at 4:00 PM and the evening self-study lessons start at 7:10 PM. The school ends at 2:30 PM on Friday. On the campus, we usually hand in our phones at 7:10 PM, but we usually hand in phones at the end of evening lessons on Sunday. The phones stay beside parents unless we need to hand in some homework in the evening.

Computer is a double-edged sword. The scores will be improved if we use them properly. Otherwise they may be lower. So, using computers correctly is crucial for students.

In order to strengthen the prevention of improper use of computers, we also need to hand in the computers to parents at the end of the evening lessons every day. They will give the computers back every morning. This can prevent students from over-using computers all night.

Sometimes, the homeroom teacher may ask parents whether they have collected student's phones and computers.

My schedule will be available below in this article.

Be Punctual (On Time)

Tencent (Voov) Meeting is used to have lessons. Each teacher has a personal meeting ID.

We need to join the meeting at the lessons time, including self-study lessons which have a teacher or staff to do the supervision.

Teachers also record the name of students who are late or absent at the beginning of each lesson. Sometimes, they may call the roll at any time, using the sentence below:

"Please reply 1 in the chat box if you are here."

My Schedule and Routine

My schedule for the online lessons are exactly the same as on the campus. However, my routine may be a little bit different.

Except for Friday when the school ends at 2:30 PM.

Note: My Study Planner is planner.kenstudyjourney.com. This will be opened for registration by the public next month according to my plan and approximation. It only can be used by me before.

There are 4 lessons every day, in which there may be 1 to 2 self-study lessons every day, depending on how many courses and subjects we join in. Evening lessons are all self-study lessons.

I usually play music on Apple Music when taking exercise and self-studying. This is because I like using Apple ecosystem very much and Apple Music has a lot of songs sorted into different categories (e.g. Spatial Audio, Study Beats, Pop Workout).

Thanks Apple for providing me many useful music libraries and giving me an opportunity for studying effectively.

In the self-study lessons, I finish my homework and do self-study textbooks first. After I completed all tasks today, I may remember English words using Quizlet and watch YouTube videos/vlogs and/or read blog articles by (I)GCSE. A Level, university or college students in the UK about some study tips and their daily life and routine.

Comparison with my Junior High School PCIS

The online lessons have a big difference between my school, GCGS, and my junior high school, PCIS.

The following shows the similarities and differences of major features between the online lessons of two schools:

Restrict phones Yes No
Restrict computers Yes No
Compulsory everyday exercise No Yes
Webcam during lessons During the whole lesson Only when answering questions
Call in roll Yes Yes
Software Tencent (VooV) Meeting WeClassroom
Homework Yes Yes

We can clearly see that GCGS asks parents to collect phones and computers, but PCIS does not. PCIS also requires students to take exercises every day, complete daily tasks by the PE teacher, record videos on the phone and send to the teacher.

PCIS uses credits for mathematics and chemistry online lessons to encourage students to answer questions actively using either the chatbox or the button to connect the microphone (it is blue in the image below). I always think that the button is for grabbing the position of the stage, so I do this very actively.

I also get the highest score for mathematics and chemistry. However, teachers in GCGS usually ask people to answer questions instead of encourage them to ensure everyone is listening carefully.

We should always answer questions and interact with the class. This can not only remember knowledge more firmly but also improve the confidence.

The following image shows the structure of the software of online lesson in PCIS. I usually click on the blue button to answer questions.

Tips for Having Online Lessons

We should listen to the class very carefully because students who lack study awareness usually do activities other than studying. There will be a huge difference on the scores between different kinds of students.

I wrote some articles at the beginning of 2020 in PCIS when the Covid-19 global pandemic begins. You can read through my articles to get my useful tips:

Note: I was a YouTuber at that time who usually post some videos about study tips of online lessons, but my channel is now paused until 2023 as there are massive study tasks in senior high school. If you have access to YouTube, you can find watch them inside these articles.

These are the situations and my feelings and tips of the strictest online lessons in my school. I hope you can overtake others, getter better scores and stay safe.

Alright! This is the end of the article. Thanks for reading.
