Hi there! Welcome to Ken's Study Journey! Today, I am going to introduce my life and routine in my senior high school - GCGS.

Many students in universities and colleges often share their school life and routine. I am going to share my own to let others know how I live in my school.

My senior high school life is much different from my life in junior high school, but it is similar to the school life during the summer camps when exploring and studying in some universities or colleges.

In addition, I am interested in discovering and exploring the school life of university or college students after my teacher introduced the schools during university application tutoring lessons. Also, it is important to find out this because it will be useful in the future.

Do you know how I study and life in my school? Let's begin!

You can also see my schedule to learn more about my daily life in my school and at weekends.

Note: This article may contain the school information. If you are a staff or an editor and you do not want them to be displayed on my website, please contact me to delete them.

The photos are not shown as my school restricts the usage of electronic devices. Also, it is not important to see the images of the school when exploring a student's school routine.

What is GCGS?

GCGS is shorted by Guangdong Country Garden School, but some people call it CGS for convenience.

It is situated in Foshan, Guangdong, China, which is adjacent to Guangzhou - the city where I live in. Meanwhile, it has a school bus that go to the traffic center in Phoenix City - the place where I live in - so it is convenient for me and some junior high schoolmates.

It has 3 types of senior high courses, which are MYP/DP, IGCSE/A-Level, and AP. I choose IGCSE because it is suitable for me.

Each lesson lasts 80 minutes, which is similar to SCIE - Shenzhen College of International Education - and many universities and colleges around the world. There are 4 to 5 lessons every day.

We also have morning reading at 8:10 AM. This can improve our English reading and speaking skills as we are exuberant in the morning.

At 4:30 PM, there is a club lesson after school. I registered with 4 clubs from Monday to Thursday (we do not have clubs on Friday as we go back home at 2:30 PM). We can participate in some activities to study better.

For example, I registered with 2 computer competitions training clubs as I will have the competitions later, which is helpful when applying to a university/college.

In the evening, there are 2 self-study lessons, in which we do our homework and read books. During the second lesson, we can make appointments and find teachers if we need assistance while doing the homework or studying.

We have 3 meals every day, that are breakfast at 7:30 AM, lunch at 12:35 PM, and dinner at 5:30 PM.

The queue is very crowded during peak times, such as 12:35 PM - lunch time. So, I usually read books and/or remember English words when waiting for food.

There are 2 areas in the school mess, which are Chinese food and western food. We can choose the type we like after entering the mess.

The Procedure of Buying Food

When we enter the school mess, we can see that the pictures of food and their prices are displayed on the screen, so we can choose the food faster when arriving at the window.

After picking up the food, the staff will calculate the price and ask which payment method do you want to use.

There are 2 payment methods. We just need to show the face in front of the machine to pay, which is linked to parents' Alipay account. Alternatively, we can swipe our school cards to pay.

Did you know?

Nowadays, there are some convenient mobile phone payment services in China, such as Alipay and WeChat Pay. People just need to take out their phones to pay when they are in the shops. Also, face recognition payment is supported in some shops.

In my school, however, I usually pay by scanning the face as it is more convenient than taking out the school card.

We usually live in the dormitories in my school. This is because my school is far away from my home. This also applies when I am in a university or college in the future.

We usually sleep between 10:30 PM and 7:30 AM. However, we get up at 6:40 AM on Monday as we have the flag raising ceremony on this day.

I usually fill in my daily goals checklist before sleeping time to check whether I have finished my goals or not.

The self-study lessons in the evening ends at 9:50 PM, so we usually arrive at the dormitory at 10:00 PM.

We are also allowed to go to the dormitory during dinner time (5:30 PM to 7:00 PM) and we can take a shower. This is because there will be many people take a shower in the evening before sleeping time, which is not enough.

We do not take a nap during lunch time because we have lessons all day. Also, there is no nap during the lunch time in some universities.

School Bus

We also ride the school bus on the weekend. This is because my school is far away from my home, which takes an hour.

The school bus has some lines. Different lines go to different places (usually residential areas).

The school ends on Friday afternoon (2:30 PM) and the buses depart at 3:20 PM at the main gate. Also, we usually go back to school on Sunday afternoon and the bus from Phoenix City departs at 4:00 PM.

I usually ride the line that goes to the traffic center in Phoenix City, Guangzhou because I live in Phoenix City. My parents usually pick me up at the traffic center when the bus arrives, and take me to the traffic center from my home before it departs on Sunday.

Activities in my School

There are some activities in my school, which adds the atmosphere to studying.

After China National Day, we had 8-day lesson. However, we had some activities to relax during the last 2 days. We played sports and I played piano while other classmates were singing in a performance.

Sometimes, there are some lectures from excellent students, which provides great study strategies and experiences.

In addition, there will be a bicycle riding activity next year, which plays a significant role when applying to a university or college in the future.

Comparing with PCIS, my Junior High School

The school life and routine in my senior high school, GCGS, is much different from the life and routine in my junior high school, PCIS, Phoenix City International School.

Each lesson lasts 40 minutes in my junior high school and there were about 9 lessons.

There were also some interesting activities in my junior high school, such as mathematics week, science week, and so on.

We could go back home every single day and there was a nap after lunch. So I could be exuberant both in the morning and afternoon.

Comparing with Summer Camps

I attended 2 summer camps in the summer vacation during last 2 years - July 2018 and August 2019. My life of them are similar to my GCGS school life.

I went to Elmhurst College, United States on July 2018 to study computer and improve my creativity. Then, I went to Imperial College London, United Kingdom on August 2019.

2018 United States Summer Camp

I have 4 lessons every single day. Each lesson lasts 77 minutes (1 hours and 17 minutes). The school starts at 9:00 AM and ends at 3:00 PM.

I lived in the school dormitory in the evening and I can enjoy the western food in the restaurant.

2019 United Kingdom Summer Camp

I have 2 lessons every single day during the United Kingdom summer camp. All of them are Python programming so I only have 1 type of lesson - computer programming.

Each lesson lasts 120 minutes (2 hours). The school starts at 10:00 AM and ends at 4:30 PM.

However, I lived in a homestay family, so I can enjoy the western culture.

Did you know?

This year, I could have explored and studied in a university or college in a western country this year due to the Covid-19 epidemic. So, I had IELTS lessons during the summer vacation.

However, I usually go to explore universities and/or colleges in western countries during the summer vacation in the past few years. This can let me be familiar with the school life and routine in western universities.

Adapting to a New School Routine

I could not adapt to a new school routine because I was busy preparing for an entrance exam in SCIE, and failed finally, and having IELTS training lessons in the summer vacation.

Hence, my scores were quite lower than some excellent students in my class.

I just need to adjust my routine and implement it for about 2 months to adapt to a new school routine. So, school routine is not a big problem for me.

If the epidemic hadn't happened, I could have explored, studied, and enjoyed the live and routine in universities and colleges in western countries.

Also, I could have adapted to the new school routine much faster if I hadn't had much burden on studying last semester.

This article talked about my school life and routine in my senior high school, GCGS and compared with my live in my junior high school, PCIS, and the summer camp about studying in and exploring some universities and/or colleges.

If I had adapted to the new school routine without much burden in the past, I could have got better results.

Hope you can get better results during the exam and study better in the future!
